Manaus

A country as massive as Brazil naturally alters enormously as you traverse from one coast to another
, from the exterior to the interior. Manaus is far, very far, geographically and culturally from the coastal city of Rio de Janeiro and the dynamic metropolis of Sao Paulo. The air is different, denser, darker, and the city moves to a unique rhythm. This is as close a city gets to the heart of the amazon, and that fact is reflected in the murky traditions, weather and people of Manaus

ManausThe portuguese were amazed at the continuing wilderness of Brazil’s nature, the vast scope of the lowlands, highlands, coastline and jungle of the country. Manaus sits atop one of the most important Brazilian natural reserves as well as the most famous river in the world—the Amazon. Nature crawls into the nooks and crannies of Manaus, refusing to back down in the face of an expanding population and infrastructural growth.

ManausThe indigenous tribes of the Amazon have long been figures of curiosity for children and adults alike, thanks in part to the anthropological endeavors of the twentieth century. Rumors of cannibalism, grotesque body defamations, pagan rituals and bizarre traditions are all part of the tribal stereotypes we grow up with. Manaus is the beginning point for exploration of those stereotypes and possibly the reclamation of a parcel of the Amazonian reality. It is a city full of indigenous culture, history and traditions. All of which jostle for space with more western monuments such as beautiful churches, museums, restaurants, bars, universities and shopping malls.

Perhaps you are just passing through Manaus on your way to the jungle trek of a lifetime, or maybe you have come specifically for one of the cities exciting festivals and cultural events. Whether you wish to go swimming with dolphins or take a whirl through a traditional folkloric festival, Manaus is a truly unique Brazilian experience.
