Angra dos Reis

There are 365 Islands and islets that make up the coastline of Angra dos Reis. Just about one island to explore of what would be a pretty fabulous way to spend a year……or more. Each island offers world class snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities only a drive away from Rio de Janeiro but that feels like light years when you compare the glamour of Ipanema to the solitude of the 276th islet of Angra dos Reis.

Paradise islands of Angra dos ReisAngra dos Reis translates as Bay of Kings, a reference to the date of the regions official discovery, which occurred centuries ago on the Catholic feast of the Epiphany—the celebration of the Three Kings that travelled across many miles to see the newborn baby Jesus.

The islands of the Angra do Reis don’t quite appear as regal as they seem jumbled and impossible to decipher. 365 is a vast total, and the richness of the beaches on offer can seem overwhelming upon first arriving at the busy port. But don’t let that put you off, the unspoiled pristine sand of teeny tiny bays is an experience incomparable to the ever-stretching strands of Rio de Janeiro.

Post Card Beaches in AngraAngra dos Reis is located on the green coast of Brazil. Ironic considering the two (and soon-to-be three) nuclear power plants located in the area. A regular bus service connects Rio de Janeiro to the city-centre the principal gateway to the beautiful beaches.

=> New Years Eve is a big even here, hordes of people travel down every year to escape the madness of NYE in Rio. The choice of tiny sheltered beaches allows for a much more secluded and relaxing venue to ring in the new year than the hectic madness of Copocabana.

But besides lying out in the sun on a beach all day, the waters of Angra do Reis offer some of the best snorkeling and scuba-diving opportunities in all of Brazil. The clarity of the depths allows boat passengers to watch schools of fish swim by underneath from the comfort of the deck. But if you like to delve deeper the waters off the rocky shores of Brandão, Josefa, Redonda and Papagaio islands are recommended for sponges, coral and colorful fish.

Huge boat wrecks such as the Panamanian Freighter Pinguino which sank in 1967 off the coast of Sitio Forte and now provides a fascinating site for curious divers, can also be found among the islands, there is even the wreck of a helicopter off the coast of Laje Matariz 22 feet down.
