Florianopolis

Florianopolisis a city of four hundred thousand people located in the southern state of Santa Catarina. Characterized by a subtropical climate and an internationally recognized high quality of life, it is equally a domestic and foreign tourist mecca.  Real estate has been booming here, and many Brazilians have been buying beachfront vacation homes.

Florianopolis Beach

The Ilha de Catarina, where the city is located, offers tourists the best of both worlds: lively, bustling party spots, as well as secluded pine forests, mountain ranges, and spectacular sand dunes.

Activities and Attractions

Florianpolis’s forty two beaches dominate the tourism sector. The center of the town is small, but inviting.  Make sure to stop at the Museu Historico de Santa Catarina, located in a charming colonial mansion that once was the governor’s palace.

It features elaborate floors, ceilings, and woodwork, as well as housing interesting historical artifacts from colonial and pre-Portuguese time periods. Afterwards, stroll on the Praca XV de Novembro, a pleasant walkway that boasts a famed one hundred year old fig tree. The most noteworthy church, Igreja de NS do Rosario, is a short distance away, and well worth the trek.

Most tourism activity revolves around beaches during the day, and a vibrant nightlife. It’s a good idea to keep in mind the north/south division on the island.  While the north side offers more traditional fun in the sun, with plenty of tourism infrastructure, and ample hotels and restaurants, the south is considerably more remote and quaint, dotted with picturesque little fishing villages and pristine beaches.

While Praia dos Ingleses is the standard beach, visitors may find the island’s northern tip more enjoyable. Praia de Lagoinha is particularly noteworthy, with its beach surrounded on three sides by rocky cliffs, which provides for a much more tranquil and calm beach experience.  For those seeking the best surfing, Praia do Santinho, located a bit south of Praia dos Ingleses, is highly recommended, and famed for its lack of overcrowding and the consistency of its waves.

Visitors seeking a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience are advised to head down to Praia do Campeche, a completely undeveloped beach with spectacular sand dunes.  At the southern extremity, you can take a boat to Ilha do Campeche where snorkeling, diving, hiking, and wildlife observation await.

If you’re looking for an authentic village experience, Ribeirao de Ilha comes highly recommended, as much for its traditional Azorean lifestyle and historic preservation, as for the delicious oysters.
