Introduction to Brazilian Culture

In our minds, Brazilian culture is the stuff of legends: Non-stop partying, beautiful locals, football, music, beach-life and... Well, more partying. But don't be fooled by clichés, Brazil boasts much more than that and in fact embrace one of the richest and most fascinating cultures in the world. it would take a lifetime to discover and unravel it all but we will try to point you to the right direction.

Brazil was, as many people know, a Portuguese colony for over 3 centuries. Portuguese culture is therefore very prominent (most obviously in the language).

=> But those Portuguese that arrived often mixed with the native inhabitants of Brazil, and Amerindian influences are felt very strongly in Brazilian culture.

On top of this, many Africans were brought to Brazil
as slaves and helped form part of the culture. Many parts of Brazil have strong African influences, especially in Bahia, where the music and dance is for the most part inherited from this tradition.

Jazz Live Music in RioMusic is very important to Brazilian culture. Most people have heard of samba, which is considered Brazil’s national music style and has had a huge influence on musical styles all around the world. Some of the most important composers are Noel Rosa, Cartola and Nelson Cavaguinho.

=> Choro and Bossa Nova are two very important genres, too, and can be found throughout the country. All these styles will commonly be found being played by street musicians, in concert halls and in clubs, such is their importance to culture in Brazil.

A Moreninha - Joaquim Manuel de Macedo
In literature, some of Brazil's most valuable contributions came in the period of Romanticism. Joaquim Manuel de Macedo and José de Alencar are two important writers from this period. Brazil's most famous writer, Machado de Assis, also has roots in this period though his work also introduces strong elements of realism. Assis is widely regarded, both locally and internationally, as Brazil's most important literary figure.

Cinema has been an important part of the culture for over a century now. In recent years Brazilian cinema has become extremely popular. In 1962 'O Pagador de Promessas'  won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, while 'City of God' was selected as one of the 100 best films of all time by Time Magazine. The latter remains the most famous Brazilian film ever produced.

Of course, you can't mention Brazilian culture without writing about football. Football is one of the most important aspects of life in Brazil and one of the things the country is most famous for. Brazil's national team have won more World Cups than any other country and are reguarly regarded as one of the finest teams in the FIFA World Rankings.

They win plaudits for their fluid, technically flawless style and their incredibe flair that's mixed with a clear love of the game, as exemplified by Ronaldhino in his prime. The 2014 World Cup will be in Brazil, which promises to be an event that could even eclipse Carnival.

=> Oh, did we not mention Carnival? The biggest, most famous festival in the world, Carnival is a week of non-stop partying, dancing and drinking, fuelled by Brazil's exuberant, inimitable culture.
