São Paulo Fashion Week

Fashion in Brazil is fast becoming serious competition for established hubs of fashion design such as Paris, Milan and London. The São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) is the largest fashion event in Brazil, the most important in Latin America and the fifth largest fashion week in the world—after Paris, Milan, New York and London. ..........................................................................................................................................

The first SPFW was held in 1996, at the same time as international brands such as Chanel, Versace, Gucci began to open stores in Brazil.

This era of fashion evolution instigated huge changes in the Brazilian textile industry. Brazilian businessmen began to invest in the latest technology, machinery and skilled labour in order to compete with the foreign fashion markets. It was also during this period that Brazilian supermodels like Gisele Bundchen, Isabeli Fontana, Ana Claudia Michels, Alessandra Ambrosio and others began to emerge.

Today this generation of Brazilian supermodels has risen to become famous names in the global fashion industry, dominating campaigns for all the major luxury brands and catwalk shows. Many Brazilian brands like Colcci, Osklen, Cavalera, TNG, Triton, Virzi, Zapping, Animale also began to receive attention from abroad during this period—throwing the young designers at their helm, such as Ricardo Almeida, Reinaldo Lourenço, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Gloria Coelho, Victor Dzenk, Ronaldo Fraga, Amir Slama, Tufi Duek, Maria Fernanda Lucena, Neil Barrett, Patricia Vieira, Ray Goeye, Lorenzo Merlino, Marcia Ganem, into the spotlight. ..........................................................................................................................................

Of this roll-call several names, such as Carlos Miele and Francisco Costa—the creative director of Calvin Klein Collection—have become titans in today’s fashion world. .......................................................................................................................................... As well as providing a revolutionary boost to the Brazilian fashion industry, the launch of SPFW brought important support to numerous social causes; famine prevention, cancer research, the fight against AIDS, the recycling industry and education funding. At each new edition of the event there are exhibitions of art, photography and fashion from renowned Brazilian and international artists. ..........................................................................................................................................

Another important even in the Brazilian fashion calendar is Fashion Rio, a project by FIRJAN, with the support of the Brazilian Textile Industry Association (ABIT), Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments (Apex-Brazil) and the Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises (SEBRAE) of Rio de Janeiro. Concurrent to the Fashion Rio event a Fair Trade called Rio à Porter is held.

..........................................................................................................................................

The FIRJAN (Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro) granted license to InBrands to operate Fashion Rio for a period of ten years. The event has been held at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and at the Marina da Gloria, in Rio de Janeiro and has launched several brands on the market. Currently, with the direction of Paulo Borges, the event is held at Pier Maua. Other fashion events, smaller but just as important as the aforementioned, take place across Brazil. ..........................................................................................................................................
