Brazilian Nightlife

As you probably are already aware, Brazil has a justifiably famous reputation for nightlife, perhaps exemplified by the decadent and delightful Carioca culture. If you're headed out for a night on the town, make sure to pace yourself. Dinner on weekends typically takes place around 10pm, as most places don't even open until 11pm. Dancing and drinking begins at midnight, and goes until the wee hours of the morning.

Carnival in Sao PauloWhether you are headed to a botequin, a small neighborhood bar in Rio, to drink beer and eat snacks, or to an outdoor street party, a samba club, or one of the many sophisticated high-end nightclubs to be found around the city, remember to take everything in stride, and don't take yourself too seriously.

The two cover fees will be posted at the door. Some clubs, particularly high end ones, have a drink minimum, per person, which can be up to R$100.

When you enter a club, you will typically be given a drink card, on which will be recorded your consumption over the course of the night. It is not, like in many other countries, a pay as you go system. At the end of the night, you can settle up with cash or card on your way out, and you will be given an exit ticket. A ten percent gratuity is typically included on your bill. Whatever you do, don't lose your card, as you will end up being charged an astronomical fee to leave.
