Brazilian Football

When you think of Brazil, undoubtedly some of the first few things that come to mind are beaches, samba and football.

Football is an integral part of Brazilian culture and is, of course, the national sport. Brazilians follow football in their thousands, probably thanks to how successful their national team has been throughout the years.

Football, it's in their genes

Almost since international football began, the Brazilian national team have been icons of beautiful, technical and flowing football. Down the years the country has produced some of the finest teams and players ever to have graced the game, including Pele, arguably the greatest footballer of all time.

Although local Brazilian football doesn’t rival the quality of European leagues, it is nonetheless one of the best leagues in South America, and is home to countless talents. So good is the league, in fact, that Neymar has thus far opted to stay despite multi-million dollar offers to bring him to Europe.

Pele, the Greatest?

Football in Brazil is played everywhere - on the streets, on the beach, in the home and on courts. Indeed, if you wander down to the beach in Rio de Janeiro, don’t be surprised to see groups of men and women playing kick-ups for hours.

It’s actually far rarer to see the game being played on a pitch, since Brazilians prefer the quick-pace of futsal, or 5 a side football. Be warned if you’re tempted to join in though, the standard is almost exclusively very high.
