Horseback Riding in Brazil

Brazil offers one of the widest ranges of horse-riding experiences in South America. From the beaches of Florianopolis to the tropical rainforests of the amazon, the horse-mad Brazilians have carved a niche for the avid rider. Herding traditions across the country have fed a culture of Brazilian gauchosvaqueiros or peões that tend to the enormous number of cattle and other animals that supply the Brazilian livestock industry. Their livelihoods have spawned a horse-breeding trend along the length and breadth of Brazil that has trickled down to the tourist industry to provide the variety of options for horse-riding trails that you can sample today.

Roughly two thirds of the Pantanal Plains belongs to the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, extending to the west into Bolivia and southwest to Paraguay.

=> Horse rides are often offered along the Correntoso River, an arm of the Rio Negro forming a delta that runs through swampland and a wildlife sanctuary boasting some of Pantanal's most beautiful scenery. On the edges of the Correntoso river hordes of thousands of majestic egrets come to gather—an unforgettable sight for anyone to see.

Another favored spot for horse-riding trails are the sub-tropical islands of Santa Caterina in southern Brazil.
Here a basic horse ride will include gaping vistas that encompass lakes, rivers, forests, remote fazendas, and never-ending grasslands. The South American cowboy culture here is strong, and the local guachos are some of the best guides in the world for leading your horse across hidden and beautiful tropical trails.

The popular coastal regions of Florianopolis and Bahia offer off-the-beaten-track horseback trails across some of the most glittering beaches in Brazil. Galloping across the surf is a horse-riders paradise, and where better to experience that feeling of freedom than in an isolated moonlit cove during one of the night-time rides just north of the village of Trancoso in Bahia.
