Rio de Janeiro
is the center of the Brazilian gay scene, but there are also smaller and active gay communities in Sao Paulo, Salvador and Belo Horizonte.

Many cities boast large and vibrant gay pride parades, and visitors to any major city will have no problems finding gay friendly entertainment and businesses. Rio even has separate gay beaches.

While the cities are typically characterized by a laid back attitude, gay and lesbian travelers should be more cautious in the Brazilian countryside, where jokes or rude remarks might be made. And while violence against the gay community is virtually unheard of in Brazil, public displays of affection, especially in the smaller towns, are typically frowned upon.  There are no laws against homosexuality in Brazil, and the age of consent is eighteen for all types of relationships.
