I told you to keep your American mobile, Brad! One of the beauty of new technology is that you can pretty much anywhere in the World now, buy a local SIM card for very cheap and be bang on the top of communication => Well, not in Brazil...

Yes, you can find a SIM card and get a local phone number but it just doesn't work very well, especially in Rio, and it will be even worst if you want to have Internet mobile.

That one will soon loose her hair out of stress...There are 4 major phone operators in Brazil : VIVO, TIM, CLARO, & OI. The biggest one with best coverage is Vivo but you simply can't buy the SIM Card as a tourist. And that's another surprise that awaits you in Brazil, there are many things you can't do or buy without having a CPF number (basically a tax number). Luckily, we have explained here : How to get a CPF in Brazil. It's pretty easy when you know how and definitely worthy if you gonna stay more than a month in the country.

OUR RECOMMENDATION:
..........................................................................................................................................

1. If you gonna get a CPF, go for Vivo (SIM or plan with phone to buy in a Vivo shop, many of them located in Shopping Malls) and ask for pay as you go card.

2. No CPF, go for TIM. Not as good but you can buy the SIM Card for about R$10 even in the street in the stalls where they sell newspapers (look at the signs : “TIM CARGAS AQUI”)

=> To credit your phone, just go to Newspaper stalls or in Pharmacies and ask for VIVO or TIM cargas, there are different amounts (from R$3) then type your phone number twice on the machine and if your lucky it will work right away! (Vivo is particularly temperamental with crediting...)
