Demographically, Rio de Janeiro is the second most populous city in Brazil after Sao Paulo, home to 6.3 million people, and the sixth largest city in South America.

Lagoa Rodrigo Freitas Rio de JaneiroGeographically it is a blessed city, located between rising mountain peaks from the Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar) to the Corcovado down to Guanabara Bay, close to the Tropic of Capricorn. The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas lies in behind the bay, sometimes fondly (or cheesily depending on your level of cynicism) nick-named the heart of Rio because of its shape.

Rio de Janeiro populationThe population is a varied mix of Portuguese descendants, African-slave descendants, indigenous descendants, and immigrants from around the world. Rio has always been a destination for the persecuted and the poor. Portuguese settlers flooded into the city during the Napoleonic wars of the 19th century and later, internal displacement originating in Minas Gerais and other rapidly developed areas of the country, brought large amounts of Amerindian and colonial descendants into the city.

Almost half of the city’s population today has part-heritage from the huge numbers of slaves shipped over from Angola and Mali as well as other parts of Western Africa. The Japanese have only recently claimed Rio de Janeiro as their own, and along with the residents of Sao Paolo, have formed the largest Japanese communities outside of the motherland, along with some of the most amazing fusion sushi you can find.
