Volunteering in Brazil

For those seeking more than just a vacation, volunteering in Brazil is an attractive, and often very affordable opportunity.  Volunteer programs typically range from a couple of weeks to as long as a year, and are located throughout the entire country.  It’s important to do extensive research on your program first, and make sure to ask for references.  While Brazil’s economy has been booming in the last decade, it still faces pressing social problems, including vast income inequality, overpopulation of urban centers, exploitation of natural resources, and perhaps most troubling, the rapid destruction of its virgin rainforest.

While some organizations happily accept volunteers for free, many also charge a nominal weekly or monthly fee.  You will also want to determine whether food and/or lodging are paid for by the organization.  In place of staying in a hotel or hostel, a fun (and usually cheap option) is arranging a homestay with a local family.

If you are working in an educational setting, you may be asked to make a small weekly contribution towards classroom materials.  If you’re interested in working in a rural setting, programs typically involve conservation, wildlife and wilderness education, sustainability, and preventing Amazon deforestation.
